Turning a Fitness Experiment into Joy for Kids

At WeGym, innovation is at the heart of everything we do. Our mission has always been to design fitness products that inspire movement, build strength, and make wellness accessible to all. But sometimes, innovation leads us down unexpected (and deeply rewarding) paths.

From Fitness Gear to Playtime Cheer

Earlier this year, our product development team began experimenting with new designs for our next-generation fitness balls. We tested multiple prototypes, refining materials, textures, and elasticity to find the perfect balance for functional workouts. After several rounds of testing, we discovered that while one batch of prototypes didn’t quite meet our performance standards for gym use, they were incredibly lightweight, durable, and fun to toss around, making them ideal for play.

Rather than letting these perfectly good balls go to waste, we saw an opportunity to bring joy and movement to a different audience: kids.

600 Balls, Countless Smiles

In partnership with Title I schools and Boys & Girls Clubs across the United States, WeGym donated nearly 600 play balls to communities that need them most. These organizations serve thousands of children, many of whom don’t always have access to quality recreational equipment.

For us, this initiative wasn’t just about sustainability, it was about giving back. Each ball represents our commitment to fostering active lifestyles and fun, not only for fitness enthusiasts but for future generations who deserve the same opportunities to move, play, and grow.

A Culture of Purpose

At WeGym, purpose drives every product and every decision. We believe fitness is more than a workout, it’s a way to connect, empower, and uplift. Giving back to our communities reminds us that wellness takes many forms, from a child’s laughter on the playground to a shared moment of teamwork and play.

As we continue to innovate, we remain dedicated to finding new ways to use our products and resources to make a difference where it matters most- because movement, at its core, should always create a positive impact.

A Personal Note from Whitney Houlin, Fitness Director

Before joining WeGym, I spent 12 years as an elementary school teacher. Seeing our prototype balls find a new life in classrooms and playgrounds across the country has been a truly full-circle moment for me.

I’ve seen firsthand how something as simple as a ball can spark connection, teamwork, and joy. Knowing that our innovation is now helping kids stay active and have fun makes me incredibly proud- not just of our products, but of the heart behind what we do at WeGym.
